We’ve all been there: you’ve taken years to grow your locks, finally reach a place where you feel happy with the length, and all of a sudden feel a little, well… bored. Don’t get us wrong, long hair is incredibly chic and super versatile too, but after all that growing, you may feel the need to do something a bit spontaneous.
Enter: the humble fringe. Chopping in some stylish bangs can be just the change you need, without majorly back-peddling and cutting everything off instead in one fell swoop. Fringes are always on trend, and there’s one to suit just about every face shape and style.
The good news is that fringes just ‘go’ with length; longer locks have the advantage of looking good with just about anything, meaning it’s really dealer’s choice when it comes to deciding on the type of fringe you want and how to style it.
“With long hair, fringes can really liven up a hairstyle,” agrees Stephen Buller, Co-Founder of Buller and Rice. “They can frame the face and highlight many features.”
Buller believes the best type of fringes are those that “offer versatility,” as “they are often easiest to style at home.” For example, he’s a big fan of Billie Eilish’s blonde bangs: “Eilish has a soft, layered haircut, with face-framing layers that seamlessly connect into the fringe. It offers a soft but sexy look, which is very easy to style.”
He adds: “the Fringe has a softer edge, allowing you to move it around or even get caught in the wind, without it looking ruined.”
Buller also notes that the fringe of the moment is the “shag/shullet/wolf cut, like Beyoncé’s recent style, for reference.” He notes that this style is defined by “longer hair, styled with shorter, shattered layering that flows from the fringe,” and is “best worn with natural, wavy textures, that could be enhanced with a curling wand, for extra definition.”
